A tasting experience of Wines of Moldova

We recently got an opportunity to savour selected wines from Moldova at an informal wine tasting organised at the residence of the Ambassador of Moldova in New Delhi. Brief details of the wines are as follows.

Chateau Purcari Cuvee de Purcari Brut

A rich, buttery & oaked Chardonnay

Made with the traditional method this sparkling wine comes from a nutrient rich terroir. A graceful blend of Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc and Pinot Noir, this effervescent bubbly from a two century old wine house, displays a unique elegance with notes of citrus fruits, green apples and apricots. Certainly a food friendly wine which everyone felt would also go nicely with well prepared Indian street food style food.

Chateau Vartely Taraboste Chardonnay

A rich, buttery and oaked Chardonnay

A single varietal wine which has been fermented and aged in new oak barrels, this Chardonnay had a sharp acidity. Having undergone the malolactic fermentation (where the crisp malic acid in the wine is converted into a more softer, lactic acid) it gives a rounded mouthfeel. The wine also spends eight months on fine lees (sur lie) in oak barrels giving it a rich texture. Personally it reminded me of some of the rich, buttery and oaked Chardonnay wines from Burgundy.

Fautor Aurore Rara Neagră

A red wine from Moldova

This wine had a deep red colour with garnet-like reflections. It displays elegant notes of ripe crunchy red fruit with a spicy vanilla structure. Both winery and the vineyards are situated in Tigheci microzone, as part of viticulture and winemaking area “Valul lui Traian”, South of Moldova, which is one of the best areas for producing high quality wines.

Fautor Late Harvest Traminer

Sweet wine from Moldova

This sweet wine from Fatour winery was the last one in the tasting flight. Flavours of honey, plum jam and cardamom were well balanced by a pleasant acidity, making it smooth on the palate.

Wine Tasting Panel and Conduct

The wine tasting panel

The wine tasting was conducted by the gracious host Mr William in a pleasant manner. The tasting panel represented countries around the globe be to include Moldova, Belgium, Turkey and India.

With lots of discussions, questions, answers and sharing of views on wines and the wine culture of Moldova, it made a wonderful and a memorable wine tasting evening. Towards the end, we also got to see few of Moldova paintings made with wine based paints.

We do hope to see Wines of Moldova coming into the Indian markets soon and I’m sure they would get a good response. Cheers !!

My wine journey started in 2013 and I soon earned my WSET certifications in quick succession. At same time I started with writing on wines on my blog page and also got opportunities to write for renowned wine magazines in India. I’ve also written a couple of research papers on Indian wine industry. Presently I’m also tenanting the position of the President Delhi Wine Club. I’m on panel of Judges in International Wine Challenge (London) and Michelangelo Wine and Spirits Awards (South Africa). I believe in the tagline : Wine Connects.
