The Spirit of a Place

Before I write about our tryst with Paris, let me touch upon the title of this post – The Spirit of a Place . Many years ago, I got introduced to the concept that ‘every place – maybe a town, city or a country, has an inherent spirit’.

“Breathe Paris in, it nourishes the soul” – Victor Hugo

And it’s this spirit of a place only, which attracts the right kind people to it – whether as tourists or citizens, who visit or stay there. These are the people who nourish the soul of the place and work towards developing it to its full potential, in accordance to its spirit.

If you believe this then a lot of understanding falls into perspective. Say for example, how France is known best for its perfumes, sauces, fashion and wines. Or why Scotland is famous for its whiskey. And how India is a spiritual place of temples and religion.

Over the years in history these places have attracted people having the right kind knowledge, skills and inclination to develop it in these fields and the process still goes on.

“The chief danger about Paris is that it is such a strong stimulant.” – TS Eliot

This also explains how and why you visit certain places or decide to make it your home. It’s all the spirit of a place which makes you make such decisions, so that you contribute to her (place) progressing towards what she (place) wants to become.

Coming back to the topic, I feel it was the Spirit of Paris which motivated us to plan our very first trip to this historic city. Here are a few snippets from this memorable visit.
