French National Day 2026 Celebration in New Delhi

By Mukul Manku

I was honoured and felt privileged to be invited to be a part of French National Day celebration organised by the Embassy of France in New Delhi on 14th July 2026.

As I entered the venue, Zora – Delhi Convention Centre that evening, I was impressed by the vastness of the hall, its exotic interiors and decorations. Though I reached early but the venue was already teeming with guests.

Moving towards where most of people were gathered, I came across a luxurious spread of cold cuts, cheeses and breads on a long table. Picking up a triangular piece of cheese, I wondered around till I came across a bar serving wines and other beverages.

My first instinct was to look for French wines and to my delight I found three of these laid out on the bar table itself. These were:

Paul Jaboulet Aîné Parallèle 45 Côtes du Rhône Rouge 2021

An organic Côtes du Rhône from the Southern Rhône Valley, this wine is named after the 45th parallel north, which passes near the estate, it is one of the Rhône Valley’s most recognised and dependable wines.

Domaine Chassin Cuvée Prestige Muscadet Sèvre-et-Maine Sur Lie 2024

A crisp, dry Loire Valley white made from Melon de Bourgogne. The “Sur Lie” ageing method keeps the wine on its fine lees, adding texture and complexity while preserving its freshness.

Les Charmes Dompierre Médoc 2021

A classic Left Bank Bordeaux, this Cabernet Sauvignon led blend comes from Médoc, which is famed for its gravelly soils, producing elegant wines with excellent ageing potential.

These three wines offered a fine snapshot of three iconic French wine regions: Rhône Valley, Loire Valley and Bordeaux.

There were other French wines too, laid out at different places, including a bottle from Château Pédesclaux, a prestigious Fifth Growth (Cinquième Cru Classé) estate from Pauillac.

Here I must add a disclaimer that my interest in checking out the wines first was only to keep in mind which French region I’m drinking while immersing myself in the French National Day festivities. This is at best a personal trait of mine as an avid French wines enthusiast.

Official Ceremony of the French National Day

The official ceremony commenced at 7:30pm with the rendering of the Indian National Anthem followed by the European Union Anthem and the French National Anthem.

The evening was graced by Hon’ble Union Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, who spoke about the growing momentum in the France – India partnership.

The Ambassador of France also reiterated this sentiment while addressing a distinguished gathering comprising members of the diplomatic community, senior government officials, and prominent citizens of Delhi.

Thereafter there was an audio – visual presentation, followed by a live music performance which enchanted everyone present.

French National Day Reception

The French National Day reception unfolded with colourful cultural performances celebrating India’s rich heritage, adding to the festive atmosphere.

Guests enjoyed fine food, wines, and warm hospitality before the celebrations concluded with music and dancing.

And thus ended the French National Day (also known as Bastille Day) celebrations. It was certainly memorable evening which also acknowledged the enduring friendship between France and India.

Until next time… Santé!
