Beaujolais Nouveau Day Celebrations at Embassy of France in India

Beaujolais Nouveau Day is celebrated around the world on the third Thursday of November each year. Read my earlier post here:

The Embassy of France 🇫🇷 in New Delhi also organised an event today to celebrate this momentous day.

The excellently conducted event which was well attended by wine enthusiasts from the city was held inside the French Embassy premises.

Beaujolais Nouveau Day

Traditionally, Beaujolais Nouveau Day is celebrated in the French region of Beaujolais (30 kilometres northeast of Lyon) to mark the first release of Beaujolais nouveau wine.

This day initially began in the Beaujolais region to toast the harvest of that year’s vineyards. The day has now been extended to celebrate the region’s people, culture, and history.

Beaujolais Nouveau Wines

The most important expression of Beaujolais Nouveau wine is made from the grape varietal called Gamay. Its ability to be crushed and fermented using the carbonic maceration process is quite distinctive from other grape varieties.

Furthermore, the speed of the harvest makes this red wine light, young, and fruity in body and flavour. It’s a simple red wine with no complex flavours and fruity notes.

Gamay

Beaujolais Nouveau is also special because it has a relatively short lifecycle compared to other wines. It’s best enjoyed young, so that the fruity flavours remain juicy and fresh!

Beaujolais Blanc

Besides Gamay, Chardonnay is also used in production of Beaujolais Nouveau wines. However it only accounts for about 3% of vineyards in Beaujolais — just a tiny wedge of the production — in this French region situated between the Mâconnais to the north and Lyon to the south.

But this category is earning increased attention because it is a delicious diversification. While the French keep about 65% of Beaujolais production at home, about 35% of it is exported.

The French Embassy Hall where the celebration were held was also decorated in a French style with craft models of famous landmarks of France.

The guests, while savouring these fresh and fruity wines also relished an array of buffet cold cuts, cheese and desserts laid out lavishly on the long tables.
