Meeting Jancis Robinson

Who is the most famous or infamous person you have ever met?

Well the nearest we can to meet or rather see a famous person was King Charles. During a recent visit to Scotland, we were walking towards the Royal Mile in Edinburgh and as we reached near we realised that it has been blocked for all movement by the smartly dressed traffic cops for the impending move of the convoy of King Charles III, King of the United Kingdom. After waiting on the kerb for what seemed like hours, his convoy finally arrived and we got an ample glimpse of the King.

But this doesn’t count towards today’s prompt since we just saw him passing by and not really get to meet him. It still is a historic tourist moment for us all the same.

Jancis Robinson, Master of Wine

Punctual guests getting a me time with Jancis

Back to the world of wines, the most famous person whom we got to meet has been Jancis Robinson Master of Wine. This happened during her visit to India earlier this year where she was felicitated at the iconic Captain’s Cellar at the Hotel Taj Mahal, Man Singh Road. The event was conducted by another Master of Wine and the only one from India Sonal Holland.

We had reached the venue a bit early that day and were sipping on the Chandon India Rose sparkling wine, when lo behold, we saw Jancis also entering in and coming towards us. Feeling like the proverbial early bird, the few of us present there felt excited to get a total ‘me time’ with the famous wine personality.

During the course of the evening Holland spoke about Jancis duly bringing out her achievements and contribution to the world of wines. Later Jancis Robinson also addressed all those presents to tell her about her life’s story and as to how becoming a Master of Wine in early 1980s changed her life with no looking back since then.

The story of Jancis Robinson is incomplete without a reference to the supportive contribution of her husband Nick Lander. In the video shared below she talks in details about how she got an immense encouragement from Nick, who being a restauranteur even took on the kitchen duties from Jancis, so that she could concentrate on her work. She also credited him to taking care of their three children throughout which again freed her of a lot of time to pursue her job as a Master of Wine.

In a personal conversation with Lander, I also learned that besides being a successful restauranteur, he also has a passion for history especially in the kingdoms of the past with a pointed interest in Indian Kingdoms. I certainly found him to be a multi faceted and talented person.

So that’s all about the most famous person we have met till date. Hope you liked reading about it. Cheers !!

At same time I started with writing on wines on my blog page and also got opportunities to write for renowned wine magazines in India. I’ve also written a couple of research papers on Indian wine industry. Presently I’m also tenanting the position of the President Delhi Wine Club.
